Navy Living Room: The Reveal!

Navy Living Room
If you’ve been following us on Instagram (and if you haven’t we’d love it if you did here!) then you might have noticed a few sneaky pictures of our navy living room. We started working on it 3 weeks after we moved in, and now, 4 weeks later I think we’re pretty much there.

It’s not all about pretty images though, so to protect your eyes, I’ve hidden the before shots after the jump…

Before I share the glorious (!) before images I want to explain the background of our house. Our house is only around 10 years old and it’s only been decorated once since then. The colours aren’t horrendous but they are fairly uninspiring and with a newer house you can’t rely on character features to bring the property to life either. Having said that we knew all this when we brought the house, and we still love it!

Our plan for the living room was to create a cosy and welcoming space by adding a bit of colour and also creating a focal point for the room. Not as easy as it sounds when you see what we started with…

Our first step was to remove the fairly dated gas fireplace (Simon removed the actual fireplace, but we did call in a gas engineer to cap the pipe). Which left us with this:

Luckily we had a plan in place to cover up what was now quite a large hole in the wall!

We love the look of log burners but knew we couldn’t really justify the cost of a real one, especially as we don’t need it for heating. We decided that a realistic looking electric log burner would do the trick, which also meant we could house the TV above it without fear of melting anything electrical! Rather than housing the 2 separately we decided that the best thing to do was create a fake chimney breast.

No step-by-step tutorial unfortunately, but these are very popular so if you’re interested in recreating something similar I’d really suggest having a quick google to find a tutorial that works for you. Here are a few snaps of ours in progress:

Several coats of paint later, and then a delay whilst we waited for our wallpaper to arrive the living room is really now transformed. The space feels light in the day, despite the navy, and very cosy at night with the burner shining. What do you think of our refreshed navy living room? Have you ever created a focal point from scratch?
